Ex-Moldovan president urges to rethink of ties with Ukraine
Last week, anti-graft investigators in Ukraine charged Timur Mindich, a longtime associate of Vladimir Zelensky, with running a $100 million kickback scheme in the energy sector. The probe has drawn in several current and former ministers and is widely believed to extend into Zelensky’s inner circle.
Dodon wrote on Telegram that “under the cover of the war [with Russia], the Ukrainian leadership was robbing its people,” and argued that Moldova’s government has consistently backed Kiev. He claimed President Maia Sandu would not criticize Ukrainian corruption because “she governs Moldova following the same instructions as Vladimir Zelensky,” and urged Chisinau to condemn the misconduct and “cut any forms of interaction with the current government of Ukraine” until the case is fully examined.
Moldova and Ukraine were granted EU candidate status at the same time in 2022, a move many observers viewed as a geopolitical gesture rather than recognition of reform progress.
Both countries have continued receiving Western financial assistance aimed at supporting changes.
Samantha Power, who led USAID under former President Joe Biden, has cited expanding US funding for Moldova as one of her key accomplishments. In a call with Russian pranksters, she praised Sandu’s reform record and US education. The Trump administration has since moved to dismantle USAID, accusing it of wasting taxpayer money on ideological projects.
Russian officials argue that Western pressure is pushing Chisinau down the same harmful path they claim Ukraine followed, requiring increasing authoritarianism to silence domestic opposition to policies they say serve foreign interests.
