Moldovan President thanks EU for recognizing her nation’s progress

(MENAFN) Moldovan President Maia Sandu expressed gratitude to the European Commission on Tuesday for recognizing the country’s strides in its EU accession process, as the bloc released a report assessing its enlargement partners.

European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos described 2025 as a “good year for our work with candidate countries,” highlighting “significant” progress made by Montenegro, Albania, Moldova, and Ukraine along the EU path. Kos added on social media that Moldova achieved the “biggest progress on its accession path,” deepening cooperation with the EU “despite the continuous hybrid threats and attempts to destabilise the country and its EU course.”

“Thank you for recognising our progress, @EU_Commission. Moldova has shown that even in the hardest times, Moldova delivers — and that the European Union can count on us,” Sandu said in response.

The president’s remarks coincided with a working visit to Brussels, where she described her meeting with European Council President Antonio Costa as “productive.” Sandu is also scheduled to meet with Kos, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, and other senior EU officials, in addition to attending a conference.

The visit follows the swearing-in of Moldova’s new government under Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu, after Sandu’s Party of Action and Solidarity secured a parliamentary majority in September. In the lead-up to the election, Sandu alleged Russian interference, claiming in July that Moscow was “investing in multiple political vehicles” to influence the legislature. Russia denied the accusations and accused Moldovan authorities of “dividing citizens” by restricting polling stations in Russia while increasing them across Europe.
